The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City inspires kids to live out their dreams.  For this reason, we provide affordable, accessible opportunities in the urban core. Owing to our generous supporters, nearly 8,000 local kids get to experience “luxuries” they never thought possible.  For example, baseball games, private tutors, art classes, field trips, and more become available.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City provides a fun, safe environment for kids to learn, play, grow and meet new friends.

From sports to education and group activities, the Clubs provide quality programs to thousands of area kids every day. Kids who may otherwise lack the resources for such opportunities.

The number of children left home alone with no adult supervision has only increased over the past 10 years. With this in mind, the Clubs are open before and after school, snow days and some holidays.  Working to provide a positive outlet for kids during their free time.

Giving these kids a wholesome place to go and some positive guidance is the key to bettering their lives … building their self-esteem … as well as providing a GREAT future for the kids who need us most.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City's Whole Child Program Model encompasses  the inter-relationship of  our youth’s educational, social, emotional, physical and moral development.

Playing organized team sports, exploring the city's landmark institutions or even venturing beyond our local neighborhoods are opportunities many of us take for granted. Oftentimes, these experiences are quite elusive for young people dwelling in disadvantaged circumstances.

Many of our youth in the urban core face hardships and challenges beyond their years.  By joining the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, youth who need us most gain valuable experiences to help them succeed in school and in life.

Sports L•A•B™

isn't just about sports.

As part of the Whole Child Program Model, Sports L•A•B™ works towards helping young members develop a well rounded individual, using sports as a focus, our members will gain skills and knowledge that will help them in their future endeavors, whatever they may be. While developing healthy, active lifestyles, our members will also be able to and are encouraged to participate in a number of additional programs.

Helping our club members practice healthy lifestyle choices that will raise their quality of life from now, into adulthood.

As part of Sports LAB, our members learn exercise, proper nutrition, fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship impact their lives in positive ways. As a result, they develop the skills they need to resist drug or alcohol abuse, gang involvement and other risky behaviors. We use a number of programs to assist with this goal, including:

Heart Smart, providing keys to healthy living.

A key feature of our Healthy Lifestyles programing, is the Saint Luke's Health Systems Heart Smart Educational Series.  

Offered over a 6 week period of time, the program’s goal is to educate our members on key elements of understanding cardiovascular health and the importance of controlling blood pressure.  Focusing on youth of all ages, the program covers making healthy diet decisions, fitness activities, and learning how to monitor their own blood pressure, and what it means.

Key Program Elements Include:

  • Learning about their heart rates
  • Understanding how salt impacts the heart
  • Learning about hydration and physical activities
  • Making heart healthy decisions while eating out and shopping.

While learning about their hearts, club members have the opportunity to participate in a number of fun activities, including constructing a puzzle, group activities, and taste testing a variety of healthy foods.

We are extremely grateful to the staff and nursing students at Saint Luke’s Health Systems who all work diligently on the Heart Smart Educational Series and help bring it to the members of our Clubs! We are excited to share healthy heart educational message to more of our members in the future!

Help Kids Create Healthy Habits

Triple Play is a dynamic wellness program that demonstrates how eating right, keeping fit and forming positive relationships add up to a healthy lifestyle.  The program focuses on three areas key to the healthy development of our club members.

  • Mind: Helps Club members develop a knowledge base to acquire healthy habits, such as making smart food choices, understanding appropriate portion sizes and creating fun and balanced meals.
  • Body: Encourages young people to be physically active through fun daily fitness, including games and activities to get them moving. Daily fitness challenges give youth of every age a chance to play longer and harder at a variety of games.
  • Soul: Provides social recreation programs and activities that strengthen interpersonal skills, foster good character and develop positive relationships and cooperation among young people. Club youth acquire a healthy self-concept and belief in their self-worth, and cope well with positive and adverse situations.


Program Development

Triple Play was created by a team of experts at Boys & Girls Clubs of America, with advice and counsel from leading health, medical, nutrition and fitness experts. The program’s nutrition component was developed with the Department of Health & Human Services.

Our partners, Coca-Cola and Anthem Foundation, provide funding to support Triple Play.

SMART Educational Series (Skills, Mastery and Resilience Training) is designed to help young people develop decision making and critical thinking skills they will need to avoid many complex hazards they will come across in life.

DATE SMART Understanding safe and healthy relationships

Over the course of ten sessions with trained members of the Boys & Girls Club staff, members will learn through a number of discussions and activities understanding and skills that they will need to achieve healthy relationships that are free of violence and abuse. 

Through this program it is our goal to help our Club members to

  • Develop respectful and supportive relationships among peers in the program
  • Articulate their expectations for a dating partner
  • Identify and distinguish between abusive and respectful relationship behaviors
  • Define the terms "sexual assault" and "consent"
  • Identify sexual rights and responsibilities in a dating relationship
  • Understand the impact of gender stereotypes on individuals and relationships
  • Identify healthy characteristics of a healthy partner and a healthy relationship
  • Demonstrate the difference between abusive behavior and respectful resolution of a conflict
  • Practice communication skills
  • Know how to intervene safely in abusive situations as a friend or bystander
  • Assess changes in knowledge, attitudes and skills as a result of this program
  • Build relationships among family members and the community working to stop and prevent dating, sexual, and domestic violence

SMART Girls Program Logo

SMART Girls helps develop healthy attitudes.

SMART Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls in three age groups, spanning ages 8 to 18. Through dynamic sessions, participatory activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.

Street SMART program Logo

Street SMART Program provides club members with the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to make intelligent and informed decisions.

Since 2005 the Street SMART program has helped youth avoid becoming involved with gang violence and activities.  The program teaches youth through activities, how to maintain positive relationships, how to handle conflict, help them understand bullying and become aware of the dangers of gangs.  At the end of the program,  participants develop their own Street SMART project with the community around them that promotes anti-violence.

The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resilience Training) prevention and education program addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity.

SMART Moves is a program that has been developed since the 1980's with the help of prevention specialists and Clubs all over the country.  The program continues to evolve, incorporating the latest information and approaches that the Boys & Girls Club can learn to help teach our members effective prevention techniques.  Using various fun and educational activities, the participating members learn critical thinking skills, and refine their decision making abilities.

The program is designed for kids ages 6 to 15, and is broken up into three sections that are designed to be age appropriate.

SMART Leaders Program Logo

SMART Leaders helps teach members to become leaders and role models for their peers.

SMART Leaders is a two (2) year booster program designed to to reinforce the SMART Moves program, helping older members of the Clubs avoid substance abuse, avoid other drug-related activities and postpone sexual activity.  The program helps keep our members involved by showing them how to become peer leaders and positive role models to younger members of the clubs. 

The program is made up of two parts

SMART Leaders I

Over the course of 5 sessions, each 60-90 minutes long, the youth will participate in small group activities, led by an adult facilitator, which reinforce and revisit much of what was accomplished in the Stay SMART section of the SMART Moves program. The participants will also begin to assist with the SMART Moves program in a variety of ways throughout the year.

SMART Leaders II 

Offered only to members who have completed the first part of the program, teens who have completed SMART Leaders I will have the opportunity to reinforce the skills and knowledge they learned through the previous programs.  They will also have more opportunities to step into peer leadership roles with younger members of the Clubs, including members who are just starting the SMART Leaders program.

How long have the Clubs been serving youth in Kansas City?

Since 1912! The Boys Hotel opened in 1912 and then began operating as a Boys Club in 1935. In 1976, the Board of Directors voted to admit girls into membership and became the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City has a lineup of tested and proven, nationally recognized programs that address today’s most pressing youth issues, teaching young people the skills they need to succeed in life. What makes the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City special?

There are four key characteristics that differentiate the Clubs from other youth-serving organizations. All are critical in exerting positive impact on the life of a child:

  • Dedicated Youth Facilities – The Boys & Girls Club is a PLACE – an actual neighborhood-based building – designed solely for youth programming.
  • Open When School is Not – The Clubs are open Monday-Friday before and after school and some Saturdays. On school out days (even snow days) and most holidays, the Clubs are open when youth have free time and need positive, productive outlets.
  • Caring Professional Staff – Every Club has full-time and part-time trained youth development professionals, providing positive role models and mentors. Volunteers provide key supplementary support.
  • Affordable and Accessible to All Youth – Clubs reach out to youth who cannot afford, or may lack access to, other community programs. Dues are low – the annual membership fee is only $15 per school year.

What does it cost to be a member of the Clubs?
